Guangdong to add 19 high-speed rails by 2024

Guangdong recently unveiled its investment plan for grand infrastructure and social service projects in 2018.

The plan indicates transportation network construction will be Guangdong’s focal point this year, with an about 1.3 trillion yuan investment in constructing expressways, rail transit, ports & waterways and highways.

As for rail transit, Guangdong is about to build another 19 high-speed rails in the next 6 years, with a total investment of more than 480.7 billion yuan. These high-speed rails will be completed by 2024 and further connect Pearl River Delta (PRD) with the other regions in and around Guangdong, such as Shanwei and Meizhou in east Guangdong and Ganzhou of Jiangxi Province.

For example, the construction of Guangzhou-Shanwei Railway will be wrapped up in 2021 with 7 stations set along the route while the Guangzhou-Shanwei-Shantou Railway will be completed in 2022, which together will provide a convenient link connecting the dense population in PRD and Chaozhou-Shantou regions.

In addition, the Guangdong section of the Ganzhou-Shenzhen Railway will have 14 stations in the province linking Shenzhen with Ganzhou. This line is expected to complete in 2020 and become the first high-speed rail reaching Heyuan.

Meanwhile, more intercity railways are planned to connect the 9 cities in PRD. Two sections of the Guangzhou-Dongguan-Shenzhen Intercity Railway will finish construction by 2019 when passengers could commute between 9 cities in one hour.

According to the plan, Guangdong invests 87.8 billion yuan in building cross-province and intercity expressways in 2018. Major projects such as the second Humen Bridge, Zhuhai’s Xianghai Bridge and the new expressway to Baiyun International Airport will be completed in the next 2 years.
