Mobile payment to be available on Hong Kong Metro

The much-anticipated high-speed rail link(HSR) connecting Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou is expected to open before the end of September this year, Ma Shiheng, the chairman of Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway (HK MTR) disclosed at the 3rd One Belt and One Road Summit Forum held by the Hong Kong government and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC).

Meanwhile, according to Ma, mobile payment such as Alipay and WeChat Pay is likely to be available on the Hong Kong Metro.

Currently, many Chinese mainland operators and enterprises providing mobile payment services are participating in the tender for providing services for ticket-buying for Hong Kong Metro. The preliminary result is expected to be released at the end of this year.

Additionally, mobile payment is not only likely to spread in Hong Kong Railway, but also throughout this so called “Shopping Paradise”.

It will soon likely be possible to travel around Hong Kong with just your mobile phone.

Background:

The GZ-SZ-HK high-speed rail link entered into the testing phase in October last year. The HSR will cut the travel time between Guangzhou and Hong Kong from 100 to only 50 minutes. The total length of GZ-SZ-HK HSR is 140 km and the Hong Kong section is 26km. The line has a total of 7 stations: Guangzhou South, Qingsheng (Nansha of GZ), Humen (Dongguan), Guangming (Shenzhen), Shenzhen North, Futian (Shenzhen) and West Kowloon.
