Shenzhen aims high in building new landmark urban areas

Shenzhen has quickened its pace for creating new landmark urban areas in the city, which include Qianhai, Shenzhen Bay, Xiangmihu, the airport area and Universiade New Town.

The move aims to improve the overall level of the city, according to a recent report in the Nanfang Daily.

The airport area has a total planned area of 95 square kilometers. In the future, the plan for the area is to become a transport hub integrating an airport, seaport and high-speed railway network.

Shenzhen international convention and exhibition center is one of the area’s key projects. With an area of 1.58 million square meters, the center is expected to be the largest convention and exhibition center in the world. Recently the basement’s roof-sealing phase was completed, and the construction of steel structure has begun.

Qianhai also aims to become a world-class urban center, with the Guiwan area at its core. According to the planning, four public cultural exchange facilities, namely an international conference center, a theater, a museum and a performing park, will form the top of a T-shaped area that aims to become an equal of the Sydney Opera House.

Last July, the western section of the Shenzhen Bay coastal leisure belt made its debut, spanning 16.2 kilometers and connecting 22 themed parks.

Next, Shenzhen will step up efforts to develop the key sections of the Shenzhen Bay coastline. By strengthening the overall design of the urban nightscape, the city will upgrade the lighting of the coastal landscape to build a coastal light belt, in the hopes of creating a world-class bay area skyline.

Universiade New Town, located in the west of Longgang District, has been listed as a key area for boosting the development of advanced international education as well as the cooperation between industry, higher education institutions and research institutes.

With construction under way on a new skyscraper over 600 meters tall, the new town area is set to be developed into a new urban area and the core of eastern Shenzhen.

Additionally, with the construction of an international exchange center, Xiangmihu is going to become a hub of international exchange regarding global affairs, economics, finance, culture, science and technology.

The center will be put into use in 2020.
