Fun things to do in Guangzhou this weekend

Editor’s note: These last few days, it takes a lot of courage to go outside or stay in a place without air-conditioners. According to the Guangdong Meteorological Observatory, the hot weather will last until at least May 26th.

Here are some indoor events recommended for your weekend. How about going to a concert or visiting some interesting culture or art exhibitions in Guangzhou?

Debussymania at Xinghai Concert Hall

A playful musical joust of epic proportions between two French pianists, Hugues Leclère and Jean-François Zygel, this concert combines Debussy’s most well-known pieces with solo and duet improvisations. As a pianist, Debussy devoted his life to improvisation and interpretation. Hugues Leclère and Jean-François Zygel take inspiration from Debussy’s art of the moment where music surges forth from the imagination.

Monologues: Revel’s world of Shakespeare

Revel’s World of Shakespeare was written and will also be performed and directed by Joseph Graves, renowned American actor/writer/director. What he is going to offer is a once-in-a-lifetime theatrical experience about Shakespeare and his followers. It is comedy and tragedy, it is laughter through tears, it is dramatic craft the way Thespis intended – in short, it is the perfect piece of theatre.

Concerts of traditional Cantonese music

During the 8th Guangzhou Art Festival, the Guangdong Music and Folk Art Troupe will hold two concerts of Cantonese music in the city. All tickets for these shows will be sold at preferential prices thanks to the government subsidies.

A Century of Fashion: Hong Kong Cheongsam Story

The cheongsam exhibition at the Guangdong Museum tells the story of 20th century Hong Kong through a collection of 205 gowns. It reflects great progress in gender equality as more women in Hong Kong were getting educated and employed after the May Fourth Movement. The exhibition runs until July 17, 2018.

Asian Mediterranean - The Ceramic Trade in East Asia during the 13th and 14th Centuries

More than 300 cultural treasures unearthed from the 13th and 14th centuries are exhibited at the Guangdong Museum in Guangzhou, illustrating the prosperous ceramic trade in East Asia along the ancient maritime Silk Road. The exhibition runs until August 26, 2018.

A taste of Belgian author Georges Simenon’s life and works

The exhibition “Simenon, auteur belge à multi-facettes” presents an introduction to Simenon’s life and works, poster copies of over 30 movies adapted from Simenon’s novels, and many of Simenon’s books which are available to borrow.

The Feast: Solo exhibition by Lin Yusi at Kui Yuan Gallery

Artist Lin Yusi said, “The Family Feast”, literally means a meal prepared at home for guests; it leads to this exhibition because the works shown are small paintings made in his own home. And he hopes his heart will stay with his home and the motherland as his works go global.

Photographic exhibition “MUSE” by Zhang Haier

The exhibition “MUSE” brings together familiar and previously unseen examples of work that spans well-known photographer Zhang Haier’s career. The selection begins from his primary sources of inspiration – women, yes, but family members initially not strangers – and is focused on the major themes that emerged.
