Man thrown behind bars for stealing shared bikes

The Longgang District People’s Court has recently announced a verdict against a man surnamed Wei who stole two app-based shared bikes. The man will be jailed for six months and fined 3,000 yuan (US$471.78), the Shenzhen Evening News reported.

It is the first case in Guangdong Province that has imposed criminal punishment on a suspect for stealing shared bikes, according to the report.

The court said that Wei stole two Mobikes at the entrance of an industrial park in Ailian, Longgang District on the afternoon of Jan. 25 this year.

He pushed the two shared bikes into a warehouse of a factory where he worked and used a tool to cut off the locks attached to the bikes. While he was cutting the locks, a passer-by videotaped Wei’s behavior with a phone and later uploaded it to the Internet.

Wei later stored the bikes in the factory’s generator room and attempted to make the bikes his own property.

Based on the video, the Mobike company later tracked the serial codes attached to the bikes and used the GPS system to locate the missing bikes. The company then reported the theft to the police.

The police arrived at the scene and seized Wei. The two stolen bikes were estimated to be valued at 4,760 yuan.

Wei admitted his crime and said he was willing to take the punishment. The court granted leniency because Wei pleaded guilty. (Zhang Qian)
