International students, scholars in Guangzhou mark 200 years of Karl Marx’s birth

A recitation event on President Xi's selected speech and Karl Marx's works was held on a Pearl River cruise in Guangzhou on May 3, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Karl Marx's birth and the Youth Day.

Guangzhou students and scholars, along with international students from Guangzhou universities, participated in the event and shared the inspiration they had attained from President Xi's thoughts and Marxism, as well as stories of hard-working Chinese citizens. The event was co-hosted by the Publicity Department of Guangzhou Committee of C.P.C, the Communist Youth League (CYL) of Guangzhou Municipality, Guangzhou-based universities, the Guangzhou Port Group and the Lingnan Group.

Eight university students from Guangzhou and Belt & Road countries, including Russia, Laos and Pakistan, recited favorite excerpts from President Xi's speeches in their native languages and shared their impressions. Though the students came from different countries, all said that they were inspired by Xi's remarks.

"As a student from Laos, I'm grateful that I can benefit from the Belt & Road initiative," said Laotian student, Alounsack Inthilath, who majors in international politics at Jinan University.

"The China-Laos Railway is an important B&R project in Laos. I hope one day, I will bring my family to China by the train. And I'll be a steadfast practitioner of of the great B&R initiative."

Well-known scholars shared stories from when they were young and encouraged the young generation to shoulder more responsibility to develop the city and the country. Among them were Professor Huang Tianji, an expert on Chinese classical literature; Wu Shuoxian, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Professor Peng Yuping, dean of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Sun Yat-sen University.

University students from Guangzhou and countries including Ukraine and Russia recited their favorite excerpts from Karl Marx’s works in an effort to show that Marx's theories still shine with the light of truth.

Wang Chanjuan, deputy secretary of CYL of Guangzhou Municipality, announced the launch of a volunteer group for the city's global promotion. The volunteer team will gather people from all walks of life to promote the city's image to the world.
