Tired of crowded tourist spots? Let's go camping

Haven't decided where you want to go on the coming holidays or weekend? Instead of squeezing yourself in the huge crowds at popular scenic spots, why not go camping somewhere far from the city bustle. The following are recommended spots for you to take a camping trip with your families or friends around Guangzhou.

Apoliu Village, Conghua District (阿婆六村,从化区)

Apoliu Village, the highest village in Guangzhou at an altitude of 730 meters, is a good place to count stars or watch the moon. You can either choose to pitch your tent at the threshing ground at the entrance of the village or find a roof on a farmhouse. Then feel free to immerse yourself in the glory of a sky dotted with countless stars or bask in the bright moonlight.

The neighboring Xitou Village (溪头村) is also worth visiting. You can sample a taste of local delicacies like bamboo-tube rice, tofu stuffed with salted egg yolk and the must-try beancurd jelly.

How to get there:

Huanan Expressway (华南快速)→Jingzhu Expressway (京珠高速)→Jiebei Expressway(街北高速)→National Highway 105 (国道105)→turn right when seeing the Huguang Villa (湖光山庄)→County Highway 938 (县道938) (towards Xitou Village溪头村) →turn right when seeing the Xiyuan Villa (溪源山庄) and drive till the end

Menghuabu (cotton print veil) Village, Zengcheng District(蒙花布村,增城区)

During the season when the Chinese silver grass sprouts, the whole village appears as if it is wrapped in a cotton print — and that's how it got its name.

Facing the Zengjiang River (增江) on both sides, Menghuabu Village owns a large stretch of beach suitable for camping. Wandering along the sedate alleys, you can see many ancient buildings, all kinds of fruits like litchis and longans, and villagers going about their simple lives. The entire view is so enchanting that you may not want to leave.

How to get there:

Baihu Village (白湖村)→Highway S119 →Zhengguo County (正果镇)→ Highway X261

Chebaling Natural Reserve (车八岭自然保护区, 韶关市)

Situated in Shixing County of Shaoguan City (韶关始兴县), Chebaling is the largest natural reserve in Guangdong Province. The large lawn in front of the Chebaling Natural Museum is a perfect place to set up your campsite.

The swarms of fireflies you can see at night will probably be the highlight of camping here. A stream, a hanging bridge and an octagonal pavilion near the museum will also add extra fun to your trip.

How to get there:

Huanan Expressway (华南快速)→Jingzhu Expressway (京珠高速)→Ganshao Expressway (赣韶高速)→Shixing Exit (始兴出口)→Provincial Highway 345 (省道345)→Provincial Highway 244 (省道244)→turn left at Siqian County (司前镇)→County Highway 346 (县道346)

Hailing Island (海陵岛, 阳江市)

Hailing Island, located in Yangjiang City (阳江市), is listed as one of the 10 most beautiful islands by the magazine “Chinese National Geography.” The excavation of the ancient shipwreck — Nanhai No.1 (南海1号) — has made the island even more popular.

Tourists can encamp on the beaches along the coastline of the island, such as Dajiao Bay (大角湾), Shiliyin Beach (十里银滩), Jinsha Bay (金沙湾) and Shenqian Bay (神前湾). Stepping on the soft sand and playing with cute little crabs are the subtle pleasures you can enjoy during the trip. Watching the sunrise and sunset at the highest mountain on the island — Dajiao Mountain (大角山) — is another wonderful way to entertain yourself.

How to get there:

Guangfo Expressway (广佛高速)→Fokai Expressway (佛开高速)→Kaiyang Expressway (开阳高速) (towards Yangjiang Harbor 阳江港)→Luoyang Expressway (罗阳高速)→Zhapo Exit (闸坡出口)→Provincial Highway 277 (省道277)
