Broadway musical hits on the way to Guangzhou

It's a wondrous year for Guangzhou lovers of musicals. From Cats and Rent to Kinky Boots, these well-known and popular Broadway hits are coming to town later this year. And there are more on the way. Let's check out upcoming musicals that you might not want to miss.

Cats

One of the most successful musicals of all time, Andrew Lloyd Weber's Cats will be returning to Guangzhou, 10 years after its last performance here in 2008.

Originally adapted from TS Eliot's whimsical poems about the personalities and sociology of cats, the gala show features classic songs like "Memory" and "Magical Mr. Mistoffelees." It's the story of the hidden society, rules and manners of felines, and it's won over fans across the globe.

Rent

In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway — and forever changed the landscape of American theater. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson's Rent continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world.

A re-imagining of Puccini's La Bohème, Rent follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters - love.

Based on a 2005 film written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth, Kinky Boots is inspired by the true story of Charlie Price, a man who inherits a shoe factory from his father and ends up producing a line of high-heeled boots in partnership with Lola, a cabaret performer and drag queen.

Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star Drew longs to become the next big thing in music, and longs for fresh-off-the-bus newcomer Sherrie, a Kansas kid with stars in her eyes.
