The 123rd session of the China Import and Export Fair in Guangzhou, considered as a barometer of China's foreign trade, got underway last Sunday (April 15th).

Due to the recent tensions in China-US trade, Xu Bing, the spokesman of the Canton Fair, said the dispute had made it uncertain as to how many US buyers would attend the fair. According to Xu, US is traditionally the second-largest source of foreign buyers at the China Import and Export Fair.

"But Chinese exporters have already introduced measures to tackle the problem by optimizing product structure and opening more overseas markets,"Xu added.

At present there are no signs of disruption caused by the trade dispute. The American Chamber of Commerce in South China (AmCham South China) went on to indicate that the dispute will not impact the Canton Fair, since most US companies have long since established buying offices in China.

Chinese exporters: innovative measures introduced to reduce the impact

Most Chinese exporters expressed that they had experienced limited fallout from the recent trade disputes between China and US. They are striving to optimizing product structure and explore more overseas markets, aiming to reduce impacts resulted from changes, pushing company’s to be increasingly innovative.

“We have received a significantly increased volume of orders from US clients since March, as it is very hard for them to find a better supplier worldwide,” Liu Xuhui, the overseas sales manager from Guangdong’s Han’s Yueming Laser Group, stated.

Yueming Laser Group is a Dongguan-based high-tech enterprise manufacturing laser and selling industrial laser products, as well as focusing on Research & Development. The list released by the US last month of proposed tariff impositions included Yueming’s self-developed laser machining equipment. This upset their US partners and the number orders have rapidly increased before they have to pay extra tariffs.

KITO, a leading porcelain tiles and rustic tiles manufacturer in Guangdong., has experienced much the same phenomenon. On the first day of the Canton Fair, within just one hour hundreds of foreign buyers had visited KITO’s booth. “We found more foreign buyers this year, especially those from US and European countries,” said Liu Yanyan, the manager of the branding department.

When talking about the recent trade conflicts between China and US, Liu said that they have experienced limited impact. “As early as 2011, US imposed trade tariffs on China’s porcelain, and as such we had to innovate in order to improve our products.” Now KITO’s high-end products are welcomed by customers in US and European countries, and many foreign buyers are demonstrating great interest.

AmCham South China: Canton Fair not impacted

When talking about the recent China-US trade tensions, many US buyers at the Canton Fair expressed their dissatisfaction and believed it is unwise for US to initiate a “trade war” with China.

“As a businessman, I feel unhappy about it (China-US trade dispute). I think most ordinary people are more eager to have a stable environment for business and life,” said James, a US buyer at the fair.

During an interview with Newsgd.com, Harley Seyedin, the president of the AmCham South China, indicated that most U.S. companies have established buying offices in China which then source products all year around. The current situation will not impact the sourcing that is conducted through the Canton Fair.

When talking about the trade dispute, Seyedin said that “I firmly believe that all differences can always be resolved through mutual and friendly discussions and that the outcome will be a win-win situation”.
