Zhanjiang uses e-commerce for rural poverty alleviation

Based on the already existing six e-commerce industrial parks, Zhanjiang will further expand its trade radius, cultivating online business growth as a key driver for poverty alleviation and economic development, according to the city's Commerce Bureau.

As a leader in agriculture, Zhanjiang has an abundance of produces, especially vegetables and subtropical fruits. Due to the lack of export channels, local agricultural products are often remaindered or overstocked, which has seriously dampened farmers' enthusiasm.

However, e-commerce, emerging as a modern business model for rapid development, provides an ideal solution to push forward the marketization of local agricultural products and supply-side structural reform.

Last year, two e-commerce training sessions were held by the government to help rural residents understand the basics of running online shops, including how to sell their products, optimize supply chains and apply for WeChat official accounts.

So far, more than 130 enterprises have settled in the industrial parks. Most of them have online stores on third-party retail platforms such as Taobao and JD.com to sell agricultural products or local specialties.

In addition to managing their own businesses, the enterprises have made the construction of a Zhanjiang Pavilion on online retail platforms to be much more important since this can help polish up local brands and make a name for more than themselves.
