Rain, wind turn east: observatory

Morning commuters who prepared umbrellas for heavy rain and outfits for possible gales found the roads were dry and the wind was calm when they left home for work yesterday.

The heavy rain, said to be the heaviest so far this year by the Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory had put it, had no impact on the city. The city turned out to be overcast with sunny periods during the morning hours.

“As the force of the westerly wind was strengthened during the night, the cloud system, which was moving southeasterly, changed direction and headed eastward to Dongguan City. It brought gales of Force 7, which is 15.5 meters per second, and limited scattered rain to Guangming and northern Bao’an and Longgang districts,” said Wei Xiaolin with the Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory.

However, according to the observatory, northern Guangdong will experience thunder coupled with gales and a short period of heavy rainfall.

Affected by the cold air from the north, the weather will be dry with strong winds and the maximum temperature is estimated to be 21 degrees Celsius for the week.

The atmospheric circulation in March often creates a seasonal and unstable situation. As the cold air is rather weak, mountainous terrain in northern Guangdong, where the cold and warm currents often meet, may change the location of rainfall and the strength of the wind.

The observatory said spring is a difficult period for forecasting the weather, so it will intensify weather updates to increase weather forecast accuracy.
