By 2020, Shenzhen and Guangzhou will become two super cities in Guangdong, while Foshan and Dongguan will turn into mega-cities, according to the population planning of Guangdong Province for 2017-2030.
A super city has over 10 million inhabitants, while the population of a mega-city is between 5 million and 10 million, according to the planning, which was recently released on the provincial government’s official website.
It is predicted that the imbalance in population distribution will be further exacerbated as economic development and urbanization accelerate, and population mobility remains active.
In addition, the proportion of newly added population from other provinces will be reduced. Guangzhou and Shenzhen will strictly control the population in downtown areas and encourage moderate population growth in new districts and suburbs.
According to the planning, Guangdong will further strengthen the coordinated development of cities of different sizes, and will enhance the attractiveness of small- and medium-sized cities.
It has been proposed that the population of cities like Foshan should be moderately increased. Official figures showed Foshan had a newly registered population of 194,000 in 2017, up from 121,000 in the previous year.
