After a decade of preparation, Shenzhen University General Hospital (SUGH) held a launch ceremony Dec. 29 to announce that it was opening for trial operation. It is the first hospital to be affiliated with Shenzhen University and is directly under the management of the university.

During the trial operation, until the end of March, the hospital, which is adjacent to the university’s Xili campus in Nanshan District, will not be officially open to the general public.

Fully funded by the Shenzhen Municipal Government, the hospital was planned and designed to be a first-class public hospital that meets the standards of university-affiliated hospitals.

“SUGH is the first hospital to be built and operated with support of a local university in Shenzhen,” said Li Qingquan, president of Shenzhen University, at the launch ceremony.

“Shenzhen University has attached high value to the medical school, and we’ve invested more and more in medical studies over the past few years,” said the president. “The launch of the new hospital is a milestone for the university.”

There will be 2,000 beds in the hospital, which covers an area of nearly 90,000 square meters. The initial plan for the hospital’s first phase dates back to July 2007, and its construction started in December 2013. The hospital’s main buildings were capped in June 2015.

The first phase of the hospital, which is currently under trial operation, has five main buildings, namely an outpatient building, an inpatient building, an administration building, a teaching building and a logistics building.

“The hospital’s goal is to become the best research hospital in Shenzhen, capable of making an impact in Guangdong Province and even around the country,” said Li, “We have already hired almost 50 top medical experts from home and abroad to head the various departments.”
