Shenzhen issued a yellow alert for cold weather that will bring temperatures down to 8 degrees Celsius from today until Thursday.
The cold air, which is affecting the eastern and southern areas of China, arrived in Shenzhen on Saturday and dipped temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.
The city’s meteorological observatory also issued a blue wind alert Saturday during the coldest day since autumn. Temperatures will start to rise Friday.
The temperature drop also forced the city’s civil affairs bureau to open shelters for homeless people. Shenzhen Aid Center has ordered employees to be on duty 24 hours a day and to participate in street patrols to persuade and help homeless people to take shelter. The aid centers in Futian, Longgang and Bao’an have prepared food, hot water and quilts to help people keep warm.
