Five years of change in Guangdong village

Per capita net income of residents of Huanglong village, Foshan city, Guangdong province, is expected to be double that of 2012 this year, following last year's 76.9 percent increase over 2012 to 23,000 yuan ($3,474), said village chief Qiu Peidong.

Annual outputs from farming and from livestock and poultry stood at 72.4 million yuan and 36.4 million yuan respectively last year.

Home to 198 enterprises engaged in sectors such as plastics, hardware, electric appliance and decoration material manufacturing, the village generated 490 million yuan in industrial output last year, up 15 percent over 2012.

The local administration has worked to revitalize the village's collective assets in an open and transparent way, becoming the first village in Beijiao township to put all the assets for transactions on a public platform, Qiu said.

Between 2012 and June this year, 111 assets were put on the platform, with 90 successfully traded for a combined value of 98.73 million yuan, gaining on average 54.6 percent over the five years.

Migrant workers in the village have increased from 6,200 in 2012 to more than 10,000, with 90 percent of the locally registered families earning income from renting their apartments to the workers.

With funds also from townships and Shunde district administrations, about 30 million yuan has been invested in the village's public-benefit projects in recent years, including road renovation, kindergarten expansion and market upgrades.

A village welfare foundation has been established to help the elderly and families in poverty. In addition, 90 surveillance cameras have been installed to safeguard security in the village, Qiu said.
