Foshan gathers global creative cities, aiming to inject creativity into manufacturing

The 2017 Guangdong (Foshan) Creative City Expo is held in Foshan from November 16 to 19. This is the first expo with the theme of “creative city” in China.

To showcase the idea of “culture+technology+innovation”, the expo has 5 major exhibition halls on creative city, life style, culture and tourism, design and food. 344 enterprises attend as exhibitors, which include domestic giants, such as, Midea, Hisense and Tencent. The number of visitors exceeded 20 thousand on the first day.

The expo also attracts representatives worldwide of the Creative Cities Network, a UNESCO project to promote cooperation in urban development. The attended cities include domestic creative cities, such as Guangzhou, Beijing and Suzhou, as well as overseas creative cities in France, Nordic Europe and the U.S.A.

“Foshan is dedicated to becoming a creative center of the manufacturing industry in China. The city is also increasingly open to the global markets,” said Zhu Wei, Deputy Secretary of CPC Foshan Committee and Mayor of Foshan, “the expo aims to gather global creativity, and to offer a chance to learn from our global counterparts in cultural industry and urban development.”

According to the city government, Foshan now has quantities of cultural enterprises and industrial parks, including 4 national projects and 21 city-level projects. For example, its Guangdong Industrial Design City is the most influential industrial design cluster nationwide with 8100 R&D talents and 238 design enterprises from home and abroad.

A variety of exhibitions and activities are arranged in the expo to boost communication among global players in the field of design, manufacturing and cultural industry. Among them is the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne which is the world’s famous design biennial exhibition set up in St Etienne, the French city known as the “city of design.”

During the event, Zhou Xu, a member of the standing committee of CPC Shunde Committee, invited the French designers to build a cooperation platform for industrial design in Foshan, the famous manufacturing city across the globe. While the French designers suggested that cooperation could be branched out to the whole process of R&D, from product design to marketing.

The event is attended by officers from both the Guangdong government and the Foshan government. Representatives of foreign consulates in Guangzhou as well as enterprises and associations from Hong Kong and Macao also presented in the expo.
