Agentine province inks US$300m deals with Shenzhen firms

On the first day of the 19th China Hi-Tech Fair (CHTF) on Thursday, government officials from La Rioja, a province in Argentina, which made its debut at the “No. 1 Technology Show in China,” gained fruitful results by signing memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with three Shenzhen firms.

The potential projects, valued at US$300 million in total, are intended to be carried out by the La Rioja government and BYD, ZTE as well as Shenzhen Yahgee Modular House Co. Ltd. in the following years, said Andres Hou, the Asia Pacific representative of the provincial government’s Regional International Cooperation Office.

The signing of the MOUs was witnessed by Argentinian delegates, representatives from the three Shenzhen technology companies and officials from the Shenzhen government as well as the Consulate General of the Argentine Republic in Guangzhou.

According to the MOU between the La Rioja government and BYD, the Argentine province hopes to purchase electric buses from the carmaker to help the province achieve its energy-saving targets.

With the telecommunications equipment giant ZTE, the province wishes to collaborate to upgrade its public security by introducing smart city technologies developed by the company. Also, the Shenzhen firm will provide plans and support for network infrastructure in La Rioja.

The last MOU was signed between the Argentinian delegates and Yahgee Modular House Co. Ltd., a Shenzhen company that manufactures modular houses.

It was agreed that La Rioja will authorize Yahgee to engage in construction projects for residential buildings and hotels in the province, and will help the company build a factory in Argentina, which will provide jobs for locals.

“La Rioja is a province famous for agriculture and Shenzhen is a city known for high technologies, so we think the two areas can develop deeper ties with the Shenzhen companies exploring their business opportunities in our province. In return, that can improve our technology sector,” Ruben Eduardo Galleguillo, minister of industry and planning of La Rioja, told Shenzhen Daily in an interview Thursday afternoon.

The minister said that 14 Argentine companies and two top universities in the country sent delegations to attend the fair this year. Instead of showcasing their products and technologies, the delegates are here to seek cooperation with Shenzhen partners.

The La Rioja booth was set up in Hall 1 of Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center, which houses the booths of 27 countries and regions from along the Belt & Road route.

The province set up a liaison office in Shenzhen this March, which has been reaching out to many companies and government departments in the city over the past few months. The La Rioja government is also working hard to develop a sister city relationship with Shenzhen, said Hou.
