The southern Chinese city of Guangzhou will build a food and drug science museum, the first of its kind in China, local media outlet Southcn.com reported on Sept 16.

The news was announced following a cooperation agreement signed by Guangdong Food and Drug Administration and Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology.

According to Luo Wenzhi, director of Guangdong Food and Drug Administration, an initial 63 million yuan ($9.6 million) will be invested in the project, which will be committed to popularizing knowledge in food and medicine via multimedia and special models.

The museum will be located on the third floor of the Guangdong Science Center and will cover an area of 3,500 square meters. Construction of the project is projected to be completed by 2019.

Integrating thought enlightening and knowledge spreading with fun equipment, the museum will help visitors gain a better understanding of the relationship between human health, food and drugs as well as the history and origin of food and medicine.

"Food and drugs are closely connected to human life and we should increase the public awareness of food and drug safety," Luo said.

"The museum is a project that will greatly benefit people, enabling them to distinguish illegal drugs as well as food with potential safety hazards."
