China's national weather observatory Tuesday issued an orange alert for Typhoon Talim, the 18th typhoon this year.

At 5 p.m. Tuesday, the eye of Talim was above the northwestern Pacific Ocean, 1,050 km southeast of Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, packing winds of up to 38 meters per second, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said in a statement.

The NMC has forecasted the typhoon will either move northwest and make landfall in Zhejiang from Thursday night to Friday morning, or move north into waters near Zhejiang on Friday and then turn northeast.

From Tuesday to Wednesday, Talim will bring gales to the northern East China Sea, Taiwan Strait and east coast of Taiwan, as well as parts of the South China Sea.

The NMC also warned of this year's 19th typhoon, as yet unnamed, above waters 1,130 km southeast of Wenchang, Hainan Province, on Tuesday afternoon, moving northwest at a speed of 15 to 20 km per hour.

China has a four-tier color-coded system for severe weather, with red being the most serious, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
