Enjoying the Qiqiao Festival in Guangzhou

The Qiqiao or Qixi Festival, also known as Chinese Valentine’s Day, falls on August 28 this year. This day refers to the seventh day of the seven month in the lunar calendar every year. It is also called “the birthday of seven sisters”, “the birthday of seven fairies” or “the worship of seven fairies” in Guangzhou.

Guangzhou attaches great importance to the Qiqiao Festival. The annual Guangzhou Qiqiao Festival is now being held at the Zhu Village in Tianhe District and Canton Tower and will last until early September. Here are some of the events for you to enjoy during the festival in Guangzhou.

Girls’s coming-of-age ceremony (七夕大型女子成年及笄礼)

Time: 18:30 - 21:00, August 26, 2017

Venue: West Square, Canton Tower (广州塔西广场)

Qiqiao handicrafts competition and exhibition (赛巧会)

Time: August 24 - 29, 2017

Qiqiao Culture Museum (乞巧文化博物馆)

Qiqiao is a special festival dedicated to females that falls on the seventh day of the 7th month on the Chinese calendar. The Qiqiao Culture Museum is China's first Qiqiao culture-themed museum, focusing on the exhibition and trading of Qiqiao works, the promotion and development of Qiqiao crafts, and the preservation and research of Qiqiao as an item of intangible cultural heritage.
