Typhoon Hato "fly across" Guangdong, 6 people killed

At 12:50 yesterday, typhoon Hato made landfall in coastal areas of Zhuhai, Guangdong, with sustained winds of 162kph near the center. It is expected to move northwest across the province today, bringing torrential rains to western Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta.

6 people were killed, with 4 from Zhongshan and 2 from Zhuhai.

The China Meteorological Administration issued this year’s first red alert, still in effect in some coastal cities like Zhuhai, Shenzhen, Jiangmen, Zhongshan.

The powerful winds and torrential rains brought by Hato have brought down trees and caused power outages in Zhuhai and Macao.

Zhuhai’s Gongbei Port and Hengqin Port have reopen today, August 24.

While Hato will continue to weaken, torrential rains will spread across western Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta on August 24.

By August 25, rainfall is expected to significantly lessen, but overcast wet weather is predicted to continue throughout the whole province.

Authorities remind residents not to let their guards down, despite the storm diminishing. All fishing boats should remain in harbor and tourists should avoid traveling to typhoon-affected areas. Residents should endeavour to keep away from buildings, trees, telephone and power lines whilst outdoors. Hazardous work at height or outdoors is strictly prohibited.
