Hengqin is taking the shape of a 'sponge city' through its construction of wetland parks, concave greenlands and rain water lakes, the Zhuhai Daily reports.
Southern China's Zhuhai City was approved as a pilot sponge city by China's Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in 2016. Some 20.06 square kilometers of the Hengqin New Area is covered by the pilot program. The area is now building itself as a sponge city through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP).
Sponge city refers to an urban environment where almost every raindrop is captured, controlled and reused.
