Two Shenzhen's families cheated in gaokao scams

Two families in Shenzhen have each been cheated out of more than 10,000 yuan (US$1,464) by fraudsters in gaokao-related scams, such as an enrollment trap and subsidy cheat.

A woman surnamed Yu recently called the Shenzhen telecom anti-fraud hotline at 8123-4567 saying the family had been cheated out of 15,800 yuan by a caller who claimed her daughter had been enrolled at Tsinghua University and that the family had to pay a 15,800-yuan training fee.

After receiving the phone call, Yu was excited and went to the bank to transfer 15,800 yuan to the account designated by the caller. After having sent the money, Yu felt that she might have been cheated and called her daughter. Yu’s daughter said she didn’t know anything about the enrollment.

The fraudster later even called to ask the family to pay an additional 12,800 yuan for instrument fees.

Another resident, Fang, received a call from a woman saying that his son could receive 3,680 yuan in subsidy after the National College Entrance Examination and gave the phone number of a man surnamed Wang to contact for further information. Wang, who claimed to be the head of the Hunan Province financial department, told Fang to use an ATM to get the subsidy. Fang followed Wang’s instructions at an ATM near a Rainbow Department Store in Guanlan, Longhua District. After he completed the operation and hung up the phone, he found a total of 10,069 yuan had been transferred out of his two bank cards.

The Shenzhen telecom anti-fraud center recently received several reports of scams by fraudsters who were pretending to be enrollment and admissions officers at universities to cheat people with the excuse of requiring training or tuition fees. The center advises parents to be on guard against these scams.
