Torrential rain to hit Shenzhen

The city is expected to experience a round of torrential rain tonight and into tomorrow morning as Typhoon Merbok makes landfall on the central and eastern coast of Guangdong Province, most likely in Shanwei City.

Merbok, the second typhoon of the year, formed 650 kilometers southeast of Shanwei City in the South China Sea. It was 641 kilometers away from Shenzhen at 4 p.m. yesterday and was forecast to be the first typhoon to enter the city’s 500-kilometer prevention circle this year.

The Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory issued a white alert for the tropical storm at 3 p.m. yesterday, which is moving northward at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour.

Affected by Merbok, the weather will be cloudy with scorching heat today and occasional showers in the afternoon. The wind strength will be reinforced and torrential rain is expected tonight and tomorrow morning, relieving the heat that had lingered in the city over the past week. There will be occasional showers Wednesday and Thursday.

The yellow alert for high temperatures is still in effect.
