World Environment Day Special | Fantastic animals to find in Guangdong

June 5 marks the World Environment Day with the theme of "Connecting People to Nature". Guangdong, is always a good place embraces nature and green development. Also, there are a lot of fantastic animals you can find in the province.

In 2016, Guangdong saw good air quality with AOI (air quality index) reaching 92.7% and its forest coverage rate reached to 58.98%. By 2020, PRD will become the first national forest city group in the country.

Wowing to protect blue sky, Guangdong has determined to stop planning new coal-based power projects, which is one main reason for air pollution, and make sure that in 2020 Guangdong will have no heavy-polluted days.

Guangzhou has been growing greener and prettier since the government adopted its new green development concept. During the 12th Five-Year Plan (2010-15), Guangzhou registered an average annual growth rate of 10.1 percent, while energy consumption per unit of GDP dropped by 4.6 percent, and cumulatively fell 21.01 percent over the five-year span, outstripping the target of 19.5 percent set by the Guangdong government.

Chimelong Ocean Kingdom

Shenzhen Safari Park

Shenzhen Safari Park is the first zoo in China to uncage animals. With green mountains to the north as its barrier, it is like a bright pearl in the bustling metropolis. Covering an area of 158 acres (640,000 square meters), there are more than 300 kinds of wild animals, in total 10,000 from all over the earth. Many of them are rare animals, such as giant pandas, south China tigers, golden monkeys, Siberian tigers, flamingos, giraffes, zebras, and Asian elephants. Visitors can not only take a close look of the animals, appreciating their amusing performances, but also enjoy the thrilling Motorcycle and Car Stunt Show at night.

Zhanjiang Mangrove National Nature Reserve

It is located in the eastern, southwestern intertidal zones of Leizhou Peninsula (the southernmost part of mainland China). The reserve is about 20,278.8 hectares, among which 7,256 hectares are mangroves, accounting for 79% of the total areas of mangroves in China. It has the largest concentration and diversity of mangroves in mainland China. It was designated as a provincial nature reserve in 1990 and became a national one in 1997. In 2002, it was declared as Wetland of International Importance.

Backgrounder of World Environment Day

World Environment Day

World environment day is also known as the Environment Day, Eco Day or short form WED. It has been one of the great annual events for years which is being celebrated worldwide by the people aiming to protect the unique and life nurturing Nature on every 5th June.

World environment day annual celebration campaign was started to address the huge environmental issues like wastage and losses of food, deforestation, increasing global warming and so many. Every year celebration is planned according to the particular theme and slogan of the year to bring effectiveness in the campaign all through the world.

It is celebrated to successfully get carbon neutrality, focusing on the forest management, reducing greenhouse effects, promoting bio-fuels production by planting on degraded lands, use of hydro-power to enhance electricity production, encourage common public to use solar water heaters, energy production through solar sources, developing new drainage systems, promoting coral reefs and mangroves restoration in order to get prevented from flooding and erosion including other ways of environmental preservation. Some of the objectives of the world environment day campaign are mentioned below:

1. It is celebrated to make aware the common public about the environmental issues.

2. Encourage common people from different society and communities to actively participate in the celebration as well as become an active agent in developing environmental safety measures.
