Professional student volunteers “like” by international buyers in Canton Fair

Guangzhou’s first volunteer student group that provides professional translation service was recently formed by Haizhu District on April 22. They are now offering multilingual services as venue guiding and registration consulting in the 121st Canton Fair.

According to the Young Volunteers Association of Haizhu District, the selection of this volunteer group started in March and attracted over 200 students to participate. They come from more than 30 different local universities and mostly major in translation, commercial English or other foreign languages.

“I had experience as a guide for German tourists,” said Ouyang Yongshi, a student majoring in German from Guangzhou College of Commerce, “Now I can make use of my language skill and solve communication problems for buyers from Germany in the fair. This really gives me a sense of achievement.”

The Young Volunteers Association of Haizhu District said they set high requirements on candidates’ language skills, etiquette and abilities to response. Only 30 students with multiple language skills and various volunteer experience passed the selection. And they also accepted systematic trainings on languages and knowledges related to the Canton Fair before service.

To prepare for the 2017 Fortune Global Forum, the Young Volunteers Association of Haizhu District said they would like to attract international students studying Guangzhou for more professional services. In the meantime, they will provide translation services for other international events held in the district in the future.
