A series of vertical marathons will take place across China this year, providing challenges for the world's best athletes, according to a press conference for the 2017 International Vertical Marathon held in Guangzhou on April 18.
The races were authorized by Towerrunning World Association (TWA) and the Asian-Oceanian Vertical Marathon Association (AVA) and will include an urban series, open tournament, and an elite trophy.
Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other cities will all select their landmark skyscrapers, towers and outdoor staircases for runners to climb.
Guangzhou Tianhe Central Business District (CBD) will be the site for the three competitions.
It was also announced that rewards have been improved compared to last year.
The new competition system to be adopted will give high-scoring participants a chance to compete with elite stair racers in the finals.
Having held seven such competitions, Guangzhou announced at the conference the establishment of its own vertical marathon association to better promote the sport.
