Polo Temple Fair arrives on lunar February 11th to 13th; it is a traditional folk temple fair with a history of one thousand years. People usually buy paper Polo rooster on that day. Polo rooster is said to be deity; one out of 100 thousand paper roosters would crow early in the morning.

The 13th Guangzhou Polo Temple Fair (波罗诞) and Folk Culture Festival falls from March 8th to 10th this year in the South China Sea Fane (南海神庙) in Huangpu District of Guangzhou.

Polo Temple Fair has been highlighted by the tradition called “Five Sons Worship the King”. A huge crowd of villagers, likely ten thousand, set off from their respective village, raising five gods, and walk along to the South China Sea Fane.

The fair of this year features many elaborate performances of Guangdong’s intangible cultural heritage, apart from the classic ceremonies of Pay Tribute to the Sea, Five Sons Worship the King and so on.

It’s worthy mentioning that the intangible cultural heritage match, expected to be a grand showcase of the most representative projects, is to kick off at 10 am on 9th March. The 2 hours’ performances include 12 famous items like Guangdong Lion Dance, Cantonese Opera named “The Tale of Monkey King Borrowing a Fan”, and Folk Dance of Pi Xiu.

Meanwhile, there will be a photo exhibition of maritime silk road history, as well as a presentation of making Polo rice-pudding, Guang embroidery, and Qiqiao craft.
