[SZ] 110 killed on 10 roads

A total of 110 people were killed in 107 accidents that happened on dangerous sections of 10 roads in Shenzhen, all of which are expressways and trunk roads, in 2016.

The roads include Longgang Boulevard, National Highway 107, Bao’an Boulevard, Nanping Expressway, Shenshan Road, Songbai Road, Bulong Road, Shenhai Expressway, Songfu Boulevard and Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway.

Three common reasons that triggered the accidents were a mixture of pedestrians, vehicles, fatigue, and an inability to prevent secondary disasters, said Huang Qiang with the traffic accident department of Shenzhen traffic police bureau during an interview yesterday.

On Longgang Boulevard, 17 people were killed in 17 accidents. The 36-km road ran across seven subdistricts in Longgang with many intersections. Among the accidents, 11 caused deaths of pedestrians and nonmotorized vehicle drivers including four e-bike drivers. Most of the accidents happened during the morning.

The poor safety awareness of pedestrians and nonmotorized drivers such as illegal crossings of vehicle lanes and going against red lights were blamed as reasons for the accidents.

On the 31-km National Highway 107, which is often crowded with heavy vehicles, 17 people were killed in 16 accidents. The fatal accidents were mainly caused by drunk driving, fatigue, illegal parking, and illegally entering vehicle lanes.

On Sept. 15 last year, a van driven by Wu carrying two passengers hit a trailer that was illegally parked at an entrance to the main road of National Highway 107 in Xixiang Subdistrict. The two passengers were killed and Wu, who was suspected of driving while tired, was injured.

National Highway 107 often sees heavy vehicles mixing with electric bikes as there are some logistics service companies near the airport area.

On the 24.3-km Songbai Road in Guangming, a trunk road that links Songgang in the north and Xili in the south, nine people were killed in nine accidents.

On the 12.8-km section of Songbai Road, four people were killed in four accidents. The four people were e-bike drivers who violated rules and illegally used vehicle lanes.

A sample of 30 accidents provided by police showed 21 accidents were related to pedestrians and nonmotorized vehicles. Fourteen of them were caused by violations by pedestrians and nonmotorized vehicles. Most of them happened between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
