Guangdong performance energized Chinese New Year celebration in Madison

 

Consul General Hong Lei (L4) showed the gratitude and sympathy to Guangdong artists’ performance.

At the hundred-year-old Orpheum Theatre in downtown Madison, Wisconsin, United States, over 1000 people were singing together to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year on the evening of Feb. 8, the thirteenth day of the first lunar month.

 

The song My Motherland, a theme song of an old Chinese movie, was performed together by the Consul General of China in Chicago Mr. Hong Lei, Chinese American, Chinese overseas students and artists from Guangdong province.

Jiang Yishu, head of Madison Area Chinese Community, introduced that she couldn’t help singing with the familiar melody once she heard the song, even she has lived in Middle America for tens of years.

Jiang said that Madison has not witnessed such Chinese art performance with high standard for years, and she really appreciated Guangdong Art Troupe to bring with a cultural feast during Chinese Lunar New Year.

At the invitation of the Consul General of China in Chicago, Guangdong Art Troupe launched a ten-day touring performance “Celebrating Spring Festival with Hometown” in Middle and West America.

Regarded as one of the most cultural and livable cities in USA, Madison was their first stop, which has nearly 10,000 Chinese American and overseas students.

On that night, the Orpheum Theatre was decorated with “Chinese Red” with the stage being hung with red lanterns.


Artists from Guangdong gained audiences’ applause and cheers by presenting the excellent Chinese as well as Cantonese - style performances, including song & dance, acrobatics, and martial arts. Some local Americans even drove six hours to watch the performance from nearby states.

Consul General Hong Lei showed the gratitude and sympathy to Guangdong artists’ performance. He said Guangdong is not only a large province of economy but also a strong province of culture. “Guangdong art ensemble’s performance is very successful and it shows the beauty of Guangdong and China,” said Hong.

Before the show, Hong Lei together with the local overseas Chinese and Americans, visited the "Beautiful Guangdong" photo exhibition and watched a short documentary. They were all impressed by Guangdong's rapid development.

Guangdong Art Troupe was established by the Guangdong Department of Culture, selecting top performers from major local art troupes such as Guangdong Song & Dance Ensemble and Guangdong National Orchestra. Its performance, such as shoulder ballet, achieved various national and international awards.

After the first show, Guangdong Art Troupe will go on its tour heading to cities including Chicago, Detroit and Indianapolis, and will further interact with international students in the local universities.
