2017 Yuexiu Temple Fair: A carnival of Cantonese cuisine and culture

The Lantern Festival is around the corner (Feb. 11), so is the 2017 Yuexiu Temple Fair which will be held in Guangzhou from Feb. 11 to 17. This year, the temple fair is featured by fine food and cultural performances, plus creative bazaar, morning tea gathering and street performances.

As the highlight of Spring Festival celebrations, Yuexiu Temple Fair appeals to millions of people every year, especially the free folk-custom show tour. Instead of giving out free tickets like previous years, 20 yuan per ticket will be charged for the folk-custom show tour this year and all the ticket revenue will be donated to the intangible cultural heritage programs for youth in Yuexiu District. Tickets are available on ticketing website Damai.cn now.

Free cultural performances every day @ Zhongyou Square, Town God’s Temple (城隍庙忠佑广场)

There are Cantonese culture special performances, Lingnan culture and Hakka culture presentations, Chinese martial arts demonstrations, exotic performances, folk song and dance, jazz music, opera, cross talk, Cantonese opera and ethnic Han culture display.

Gourmet festival @ Huifu East Road (惠福东路)

As the most popular event during the temple fair, the gourmet festival offers not only authentic local snacks such as fishskin, meat ball, fried dumpling, white cut chicken and ginger milk curd, but also famous dishes recommended by A Bite of China including Jun’an steamed pig.

Intangible cultural heritage exhibition @ Beijing Road (北京路)

21 intangible cultural heritage projects take part in the exhibition, including red wood palace lantern, wood carving, jade carving, Kwon-glazed porcelain, Cantonese embroidery, copper forging, Lingnan ancient zither, and Guangzhou enamel. A Beijing Temple Fair section is first placed to present Beijing’s intangible cultural heritage projects, such as sugar figure blowing art, inside-painted bottle, cloisonne bookmark and Beijing silk figurine.

Creative bazaar from 9 am to 9 pm every day @ Beijing Road (北京路)

Stalls will be set up in Beijing Road to sell all kinds of original artworks. All the artworks are selected from all sectors of society through a competition.

Street performances every day @ Yuexiu Park (越秀公园), Gongyuanqian metro station (地铁公园前站), Grandbuy at Xihua Road (西湖路广百新翼广场)

Performances include juggling, Cantonese music, Cantonese opera, Cantonese storytelling, Chinese zither performances, African performances, and more.

Morning tea gathering from 8:30 to 10:30 am every day @ tea houses around the Town God’s Temple

A unique morning tea gathering will be held every day during the Temple Fair in a designated tea house. Follow WeChat account “周日早茶会” (gzsmtea) to sign up for free and get your e-invitation letter. Tea houses’ names in Chinese: 点都德, 幸运楼, 百乐门喜宴, 君宴酒家, 唐人轩酒楼, 一品汤臣, 俊豪海鲜酒楼.
