Top 5 most loved Guangdong mobile phone brands in overseas markets

According to the statistics recently released by China’s custom, 7 out of 10 domestic mobile phone brands with top export volume in the first half of 2016 are from Guangdong.

They include TECNO, Huawei, ZTE, OPPO, Wiko, Vivo and Gionee.

1. TECNO

TECNO is a mobile phone brand belonging to Transsion Holding, a tech company based in Shenzhen.

As the first dual-SIM handset manufacturer in Africa, TECNO developed a series of functions targeting its users.

For example, the camera of TECNO mobile has the facial identification function that specifically targets customers with darker skin tone and solves the exposure problems.

The export volume of TECNO mobile reached 32.9 million in the first half of 2016 and is expected to exceed 80 million by 2016. TRANSSION is now a leading player in the mobile industry, with a current ranking as the No.7 global exporter and No.1 in Africa with a market share of over 40%.


2. Huawei + honor

The sales volume of Huawei was ranked first in the domestic market with 43.8 million and ranked second in the oversea market with 25.4 million in the first half of 2016, according to the Sino research and China’s custom.

Huawei released 10 new smart phone models in 2016, including Mate 9, P9, Nova, G9, honor 8, honor Magic and etc.

Among them, the honor Magic is branded as the “future smart phone” which is “smarter” than the traditional ones. Apart from its appearance, honor Magic runs a brand new system called “Magic Live” which can actively the learn users’ behaviors and “think” ahead for demands.


3. ZTE + Nubia

The export volume of ZTE and its independent mobile brand, Nubia, reached 11.2 million in the first half of 2016 and ranked 4th in domestic mobile brands, according to China’s custom. Both of the brands focus on the mobile markets of China, US and Europe.

In 2016, ZTE released new model of its flagship smart phone, Axon 7, and blade A2 which targets the young generation. Axon 7 was ranked the 5th in the “Best Android Mobile Phone” in November and December according to ANDROID AUTHORITY.

Nubia released the Nubia S and Z11 this year. The Z11 which is famous for its boundless appearance and camera function, has achieved various awards worldwide on its design in 2016.


4. OPPO

The export volume of OPPO reached 6.7 million in the first half of 2016 and its shipment volume reached 20.1 million in the third quarter, which has exceeded Huawei and Mi.

According to Counterpoint Research, OPPO had 8% of the India Market sales by value and was ranked third in August. The research attributed OPPO’s success to its expension of sales centers and market campaigns reaching out to the youth.

Based in Dongguan, OPPO mobile targets customers aged under 25 with its camera function and long battery life. The company released 7 new models in 2016 and will focus on the US, India and Africa market in the future.


5.Wiko

Wiko is a mobile brand owned by TINNO, a tech company based in Shenzhen. The export volume of Wiko reached 3.1 million in the first half of 2016.

This year, it entered the TOP 5 in Western Europe and has reached #2 in France for 3 years, #4 in Italy for 2 years, and #3 in Portugal as well as #5 in Spain and Belgium, accourding to GFK July 2016 and Counterpoint Technology market report 2Q-2016.

Wiko has 4 product lines which are all targeting the young costomers.


Export volume of local smartphone brands went up in 2016

These local brands are expanding their overseas market shares, especially in the countries along the Belt and Road Initiative. Guangdong exported 4 million mobile phones to Indonesia, 2.6 million to Philipine and 2 million to Bazil in the first half of 2016, which respectively increased 65.5%, 110% and 490%.

The export volume of Guangdong mobile phone brands reached 240 million and increased 27.1% comparing the same period in 2015, which indicates the local brands are enhancing their brand competitiveness in the global market.

“Our mobile phones are getting rid of the brand images as cheap and low-end,” said Liu Duo, vice president of China Academy of Information and Communication Technology, “this should be attributed to the companies’ efforts to strengthen their product designs, manufacturing technologies and marketing strategies.”
