Zhuhai to upgrade, expand, improve infrastructure

Plans for construction of key infrastructure projects in 2017 were announced at a city work conference on Jan 17. Called for are: 

1. Transportation infrastructure 

Zhuhai will invest more than 13.18 billion yuan ($1.93 billion) in 52 transportation infrastructure construction projects concerning highway, railway, airport, seaport, waterways, and municipal roads. Outbound expressway and throughway and the city road network will be significantly improved, construction of the intercity railway will be moved up, and airport and harbor upgrades will be prioritized. 

Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge main work and Zhuhai linking line and Zhuhai Border Checkpoint projects, Honghe Bridge, Xianghai Bridge, and Hezhou-Gaolan Port Expressway will have total investment of 68.9 billion yuan ($10.1 billion), with 7 billion yuan ($1.02 billion) to be invested this year. Delta Bridge-related three projects are to be completed in 2017.

2. Energy construction

The city plans five energy projects with total investment of 63.5 billion yuan ($9.3 billion), including 7 billion yuan ($1 billion) of yearly investment. The projects concern Hengqin Multi-Supply Energy, Guishan Offshore Wind Farm in the Wanshan Marine Development Experimental Zone, Gaolan Port Natural Gas Cogeneration, and Zhuhai’s 2017 Power Grid.

3. Water conservancy   

There will be 14 water conservancy construction projects attracting total investment of 62 billion yuan ($9.1 billion) with 8 billion yuan ($1.2 billion) of yearly investment in 2017, since water conservancy is related to people’s lives and property safety. The projects concern Hengqin New Area’s flood control and landscape, four seawall reinforcements in Doumen District, flood drainage in Jinwan District and on Guihua Road in Gongbei, and shore protection in Gaolan Port.  

4. Environmental protection

Zhuhai has been honored as the Most Livable City in China for three consecutive years, and also made major progress in environmental protection last year. This year, the city arranged 14 environmental protection projects, with total investment of 8.4 billion yuan ($1.2 billion), among which 700 million yuan ($102.5 million) will be yearly investment.

The projects include the upgrade and expansion of the water purification plant in Gaolan Port Area, construction of two sewage pumping stations in the Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone, and six new projects in Hengqin New Area’s coastal zone and Doumen District’s wetland parks. The city will also speed up work on the sewage pipeline network in Xiangzhou District, upgrading of the water purification plant in Jinwan District, and improvement of the Xikengwei Refuse Landfill Site.  

5. Urban construction

Urban upgrade and optimization is one of the top eight missions on the government work agenda this year. Zhuhai will invest 131.2 billion yuan ($19.2 billion) in city construction, with 15.8 billion yuan ($2.3 billion) to be utilized this year.

Eight renovation projects in Xiangzhou District will be completed. Four new projects including a tourism development center in Doumen District will come under construction. The city will also focus on constructing infrastructure in central urban areas in the West Wing, Pingsha New Town in Gaolan Port Area, City Heart core project in Jida, and a number of old-village renovation projects in Xiangzhou District.  

Besides, Zhuhai has 22 provincial key infrastructure construction projects, attracting 133 billion yuan ($19.5 billion) of investment, with 10.5 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) to be spent this year. Wanjiang Logistics Terminal in Gaolan Port Area is to be inaugurated at the end of May, and Fushan Industrial Park’s utility tunnel in Doumen District will come under construction at the end of October.
