An annual report shows Guangzhou is ranked second for its traffic situation in China 2016 and top the first-tier cities which include Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen.
It also shows that traffic has improved in the mega-cities while congestion has become a prominent issue in second-tier cities, especially provincial capitals and provincial economic hubs.
The report was released on Jan 10 by the China Academy of Transportation Sciences, an institution affiliated to the Ministry of Transport.
It takes 34 cities including the first-tier cities, second-tier cities and provincial cities with over 3 million population as research samples, and analyzes the causes of their traffic congestion based on 6 new indicators, including network density, road area radio, intersection spacing, road gradiation, number of cross track error per capita, travel path nonlinear coefficient.
