Pearl River Delta Bay Area becomes a hot topic after National Development and Reform Committee (NDRC) recently announced that a plan will be made to enhance the country's city cluster development and Pearl River Delta Bay is included.
Pearl River Delta Bay Area includes 9 cities of the Pearl River Delta (PRD), Hong Kong and Macao, the two Special Administrative Regions (SAR) neighboring Guangdong Province.
The nine largest cities of PRD had a combined population of 57.15 million at the end of 2013, comprising 53.69% of the provincial population. According to the World Bank Group, the PRD has become the largest urban area in the world in both size and population.
The integration of the greater Pearl River Delta has been a heated topic since 2006. Earlier this year, Guangdong published the government work report of 2016 during the province's Two Sessions, calling for "optimization of Pearl River Delta metropolitan, and constructing Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area."
An NDRC official said the bay area is expected to build a healthy relation of work division among those cities, Southern Metropolitan Daily reported. Besides, it is proven that the bay area will be the most developed urban agglomeration in the world, which possesses the strongest capability of innovation and openness.
