10 years ago when Rachel Maidment, the newly arrived New Zealand Consul-General in Guangzhou, came to Guangdong for her travel in South China, she might never thought that she would have so close connections with this place that she would work here for the following several years since this October.

Hair styled into an elegant upsweep, wearing a neat blue suit, this time Maidment came back to Guangzhou with a different identity. Devoting herself to New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade for tens of years, she shows her tact in dealing with her new title in the Consulate General of New Zealand in Guangzhou smoothly.

Different from her predecessor Rebecca Needham, who has ancestors from Guangzhou, Maidment did not get so close connections with Guangdong. But it doesn’t worry her at all. Except from her work in New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade focusing on China, she has taken one year fulltime Chinese language training in National Taiwan University.

When talking with the reporter from Newsgd.com about her present impression on Guangdong, Maidment used the word “incredible” to express her feeling. She said, ”I’m very much looking forward to coming and working in Guangdong.”

Traditional fields of cooperation will continue

During the interview, Maidment exhibited her familiarness with cooperation between New Zealand and Guangdong. She introduced that Guangdong has become a major market for New Zealand’s export, and about 25% of New Zealand’s food and beefs export come to Guangdong. Also Guangdong is a major export international frontier for New Zealand’s healthy products.

Besides international trade, Maidment emphasized that New Zealand and Guangdong have very strong links on tourism and education. She stated that Guangdong has been a major source province of Chinese students who are studying in New Zealand.

Maidment believed that in future those traditional fields of cooperation between New Zealand and Guangdong would continue, especially the growth of trade between two regions, with the help of more daily direct flights between New Zealand and Guangdong.

Have a lot to learn from Guangdong’s innovative industry

Maidment showed great interests in Guangdong’s fast development on science and technology, and was confident that it would become a highlight of cooperation between New Zealand and Guangdong.

Compared with innovative industry in New Zealand, Maidment marveled at Guangdong’s capacity of making new ideas into practice quickly. Also she was very interested in innovative products made in Guangdong.

“Guangdong has enormous experiences as a teacher in creative industry and new technologies. So we have a huge amount of to learn from what has happened in Guangdong.” Maidment deemed that new industries would enhance the cooperation and expected New Zealand to expand connections to science innovation and creative industries.
