Shanghai issued the first work permit for foreigners in China under a pilot scheme that offers expats easier applying procedure.
The permit was issued to Joaquim Nassar, a French national and the Dean of studies at SJTU-Paris Tech Elite Institute of Technology in Shanghai.
Nassar applied the premit online instead of submitting paper applications.
Documentation requirements for the new permit have been reduced by nearly 50 percent; submissions of personal CVs and application letters are no longer required.
Nassar received a temporary version of the permit on Thursday morning. He will be able to change it into a plastic RFID card after the scheme is rolled out nationwide next April .
The permit's serial number will be used as a permanent ID number for foreign expats in China, along with a headshot, full name, passport number, and other important information displayed on the card.

In September 2016, the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs' (SAFEA) announced that the existing Foreign Expert Permit and Alien Employment License will be merged into a single permit, and that a trail will take place in Shanghai from November 1.
The new permit will introduce a tiered classification system for foreign workers to attract more high-level foreign talent.
All foreign employees in China will be administrated in A, B and C categories, respectively, for high-end personnel, professional personnel and temporary and seasonal personnel.
The status of the work permit holders will be decided according to a series of criteria, such as their salaries, educational backgrounds, length of service, working hours in China, age and work experience. Scores are added up to 60 minus for group C, 60 plus for B and 85 plus for A.
The high-end personnel like Joaquim Nassar will enjoy green path in application, such as no thresholds for age and working experiences and faster application approval.
