Guangzhou was voted to be the co-sponsor city of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) for the fourth time in a row during the 5th UCLG World Congress held in Bogota, Colombia on Oct 15th, local time.
Meanwhile, Guangzhou Mayor Wen Guohui was elected to be the new co-president of UCLG as well as the co-president of World Association of Major Metropolises.
UCLG was established in 2004, united from the International Union of Local Authorities (IULA), the United Towns Organizations (UTO), and Metropolis. It has become the biggest international organization for cities, local governments, and municipal associations throughout the world to develop international cooperations and city diplomacy, thus is honored as "UN of local governments".
Guangzhou has been elected as the co-sponsor city of UCLG for four times in a row respectively in 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016, also, Guangzhou mayor is elected as the co-president for four times in a row.
Guangzhou is mainly leading the works of urban innovation as the co-sponsor city of UCLG, including organizing Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation, taking charge of managing Urban Innovation Professional Committee and launching other relative activities.
