Hengqin recently built the country's first no-drainpipe road, Baoxing Road in Hongqi Village. In accordance with the "sponge city" concept, a rainwater pipe gallery has been set up. Through integrated treatment and recycling, the rainwater becomes municipal-use water for fire control, irrigation and road cleaning.
Before the transformation, Baoxing Road often suffered from serious waterlogging and the former rainwater and sewage pipe system could not completely meet drainage needs, with the overflow running up to 60 centimeters from time to time.
To solve these problems, Hengqin decided to adopt a low-impact development concept, a bypass flow of rainwater and sewage."The integrated use of the lower-concave lawn, grass ditch, rainwater drainage gallery, stormwater inlet construction and permeable pavement forms an ecological drainage system," explained Lou Chengming, Chairman of Shanghai Jiachang Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd., the project design company.
A Henqin official said: "The storage capacity of Baoxing Road's improvement project has reached 3,140 cubic meters, with rainwater harvesting capacity being about 120 cubic meters. Waterlogging has never happened since the establishment of the project."
