Drivers of hybrid-powered taxis in Guangzhou must pass a new test that includes questions on the English language before they are newly certified, according to an officer of the Guangzhou traffic committee. The new certification test also covers traditional questions on other relevant matters for the drivers.
The duration for a certificate is six years. So far all taxi drivers who have taken the test under the new system have gotten the certificates. A hybrid driver must pass the test to gain certification to drive on city roads. Hybrid cabs run on electricity as well as traditional internal combustion engines.
One 50-year-old cabbie, named Chen, said he has driven in the city for nearly 20 years, and he can’t be more familiar with Guangzhou traffic. But he said he previously didn’t know a bit of English. To get the certificate, he boned up on English for several months. He passed the test and can now use language for simple daily communications.
