On 7th March, the Development and Reform Commission of Guangdong Province formally approved the construction of Dongguan Metro Line 1. An official from the Dongguan Rail Transit Company confirmed that designs, surveys and bidding worksare in progress. Preliminary work has also begun gearing up to ensure construction begins by the end of 2016.
The first phase of the project will start from Wangniudun-Hongmei Station in the west and arrive at Huangjiang Centre Station in the east. Passing through the 10 towns and districts; Wangniudun, Hongmei, Daojiao, Wanjiang, Nancheng, Dongcheng, Dalingshan, Songshan Lake, Dalang and Huangjiang. This section will be a passenger corridor linking the central urban area with the northwest and southeast areas. The first phase of the project will have 21 stations and run a total distance of 58 km, with 25.8 km above ground lines, 30.3 km underground lines and 1.8km transitional lines.
The significance of Dongguan Metro Line 1 lies more in linking Dongguan with the surrounding cities. There will be 5 interchange stations along the line; Wanghong Station with Guangzhou-Dongguan-Shenzhen line and Foshan-Dongguan-Huizhou line, Hongfu Road Station with Metro Line 2, Dongcheng South Road Station with Dongguan-Huizhou line, Songshan Lake Station with Metro Line 3, and Huangjiang Centre Station with Metro Line 4.
Dongguan Metro Line 1 will also connect with Shenzhen Metro Line 6 (Guangming line) in the southeast. According to preliminary plans, it will also connect with the extension section of Guangzhou Metro Line 5 at the northwest Machong Station. Upon completion, it will take around 1 hour for Dongguan residents to go to Guangzhou or Shenzhen using the subway.
As part of the plan, the first phase will begin with construction of Wanghong Station-Wetland Park Station section, which will be 45.4 km long.
