Around 100 students from all over the country were accepted into the three new graduate programs at The Chinese University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Campus (CUHK-SZ) this year.
The university’s graduate programs are financial engineering, translation/interpretation and simultaneous interpretation. The first two majors are one-year programs while the third one requires two years of study.
“Our first graduate students are coming from high-quality universities at home and abroad such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Hong Kong University, the University of Melbourne and the National Chengchi University in Taiwan,” said Cai Xiaoqiang, director of the Graduate College.
Since all of the courses at the university are taught in English, language proficiency is an essential admission requirement for them. Cai said the graduate students’ English ability and academic levels are highly scrutinized by the university’s admission panel.
In order to help the students get accustomed to the internationalized courses, the university offered a monthlong free summer course for the financial engineering students and provided some assignments and reading recommendations for the other students.
Apart from the graduate students, the university also welcomed its undergraduate students and held an inauguration ceremony on September 3.
This is the second year that the university has admitted undergraduate students. This year, students had to earn 16 more points on the gaokao than last year’s students did. The university’s admissions procedure is very competitive, as students must be the top scorers in their provinces, sit for a special exam and be interviewed by admissions officers.
A Shenzhen parent surnamed Long said his family made the decision to send their daughter to the university after visiting both Hong Kong University and CUHK-SZ.
Long said he will send his daughter to study overseas when she graduates from CUHK-SZ. The father believes that the English-taught courses and the university’s unique system will help his daughter become an independent learner with an international vision.
The university is still under construction and will be complete in about 12 years.
