In a bid to boost the NBA's popularity in China, the NBA Global Games program has brought several basketball legends to Shenzhen in the past few months. Alonzo Mourning, a retired NBA player, made his city debut yesterday teaching some basketball basics at a Shenzhen high school.
Unlike the previous basketball training sessions in the Universiade Stadium, the training camp yesterday was at Longcheng Senior High School, Longgang District. It gave the NBA star a chance to get closer to the students.
It was the third time this group of 30 high school students received NBA-style training this year. The school's coach, Huang Zhenzhen, said she was happy that her students have had the chance to be trained by basketball superstars including Mourning, Giannis Antetokounmpo and DeMarre Carroll.
Huang said the NBA players had emphasized focusing on basic basketball skills.
"We made some alterations to the current training system. Now it lays more stress on fundamental basketball skills," said Huang.
At the training session yesterday, Mourning taught the students to handle the ball with both hands.
Mourning had been in Shenzhen for several days before the training yesterday morning.
"Me and some other players who have visited Shenzhen before are all impressed by how young people here love and devote themselves to this sport," said Mourning before the training yesterday.
The NBA player has a reputation for toughness in games, especially his remarkable defense skills. Mourning played for the Charlotte Hornets, the New Jersey Nets and the Miami Heat.
Mourning expects exciting games in China between the Charlotte Hornets and Los Angeles Clippers next month in Shenzhen and Shanghai.
