The people of Israel have said a joint thank you to Shanghai for the protection the city provided during World War II via a 70-second video.

Aptly titled "Thank You Shanghai" and shot in several Israeli cities, the video shows lots of Israeli people expressing their gratitude. They hold up signs that say "Thank You" in three languages: Chinese, Hebrew and English.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also appears in the video, saying: "When cities across the globe closed their doors to Jews fleeing genocide, Shanghai showed hospitality. We are eternally grateful and we will never forget, thank you."

Arnon Perlman, Israel's consul general in Shanghai, says it is only logical that Israeli people should express their gratitude.

"It is here, in Shanghai, where Jewish refugees could find shelter from the Nazi regime. It is here, in Shanghai, where Jewish refugees were received in open arms by the Chinese people."

About 23,000 Jews who fled Nazi-occupied Europe found shelter in Shanghai during the war.

A sample of comments on Weibo:

@silent: Thank you for not forgetting the history!

@ttsdad: The way they remain grateful really moves me. It's respectable.

@lovemuchunqiuse: This reminds me of an article I read a while ago. A Jewish grandpa with a thick Chinese accent was trying to find an old friend in China. Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

@zhishianzai: You help me, and I help you. We make progress together. Isn't that wonderful?

@renxindao: You are welcome! It is our tradition to help those in need, and we take pride in this tradition! Now the Chinese stock market is all messed up, so please keep your fingers crossed for Chinese stock buyers!
