Yesterday was the third day of May in the lunar calendar. The viewing of dragon boats in Chebei Village has been a traditional custom for more than 150 years. On that day, dragon boats from different villages in Guangzhou travel to the Pearl River and visit Chebei Village through Chebei Canal. The width of Chebei Canal is between 40 and 50 meters, which provides visitors very clear views of the dragon boats.
Dragon boats from the different villages first went forward and backward three times, as a traditional gesture to show respect to the host village. Then the boats docked at a side of the canal leaving enough space for other boats. After the dragon boat viewing, people from different villages were invited to have a dragon boat banquet. Chebei Village served over 120 tables to welcome all the guests from nearby villages.
Over 100,000 visitors filled in both sides of the canal. Some old villagers have attended this event for decades. Long strings of firecrackers were set off from the boats throughout the day, and everyone had a good time in spite of the heat.
