Recently, a new round of hot debate has been set off on the Internet as hospitals in Guangzhou and Shenzhen have recently announced they applied 3D-print technology to clinical surgery, but that’s not the full story.

Dr. Dunjin.Chen, Director of Guangzhou Institute of Obstetrics & Gynecology, explain the most important issues and the future of medical 3D printing in an exclusive interview with Newsgd.com.

  • Can 3D-print technology be successfully used in organ transplants?

Dr. Dunjin.Chen, Director of Guangzhou Institute of Obstetrics & Gynecology

“Yes, definitely! Actually the 3D-print technology has been widely used in clinical operations, for modeling.”

According to Chen, now patients who are going to accept complicated surgeries will receive MR or CT scan. Doctors will use 3D printing to establish a model according to the scan and stimulating the surgery in advance.

“Modeling, that’s the most common way for the application of 3D printing in clinical medicine. But at the same time, we have been doing further research in recent years. We try to use 3D printer to produce living organs which can bring stem cells into patient’s body.”

“As far as I know, a hospital in Nanjing has successfully used 3D printing in repairing bones. Printing bones for repairing is about to be widely used in surgeries. If we found proper materials for specific organ which are compatible in human’s body, we can use 3D printing to carry out organ transplants.”
