Nigerian state confirms resurgence of Lassa fever

Nigeria's southeastern state of Anambra on Monday confirmed the resurgence of Lassa fever, a disease transmitted by rodents, following the death of a medical student in the state.

Director of public health in the southeastern state Emmanuel Okafor said 65 others were being monitored following the resurgence.

Okafor told Xinhua that laboratory tests indicated two out of the 65 that were being monitored had already developed a fever.

He said the state government has the capacity to control the spread of the disease.

Lassa fever is usually transmitted to humans when they are exposed to food or water contaminated by the saliva and excreta of infected rats. In some cases, Lassa fever has similar symptoms with malaria.

More than 80 people were killed by a Lassa fever outbreak early last year in Nigeria.
