Dulan Nintharu is a lucky boy and his luck started in August last year when a medical team from Shenzhen sponsored his charity medical treatment in Sri Lanka. The little boy, who was born with two sets of genitals and two anuses, caught the attention of aid workers from Shenzhen who were visiting Sri Lanka. A local charity foundation mentioned Dulan’s situation to Yao Xiaoming, a Shenzhen eye doctor, and asked for his help.
Yao contacted the Shenzhen Hongfa Temple Charity Fund, which agreed to cover all the expenses for Dulan’s treatment in Shenzhen and Shenzhen Children’s Hospital, which offers treatment for rare diseases.
The family arrived at the hospital Nov. 30 last year with the help of volunteers. The hospital provided the family the only suite on the eighth floor, which has a separate room for the family to cook and rest while taking care of their child.
“Dulan’s disease is rare and complicated. It demanded three major surgeries that could be completed in three to five years. After thorough checks and rounds of discussions, our medical team had a final solution. We decided to have multiple surgeries jointly conducted by the orthopedics, urinary and forensic surgery departments in order to avoid pain and shorten the treatment time for the patient,” said Li Shoulin, chief physician of the urology department of Shenzhen Children’s Hospital.
