Chinese Export Fine Art Heritage from the Thirteen Hongs

Guangdong is located on the coast the South China Sea with many good harbors. It has been an important hub for foreign maritime trade since the Han Dynasty .In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, along with global trade routes expanding, three well-known products, including silk, porcelain and tea as well as artworks made in China had been introduced to Europe and the United Stated from the hub. In the 22nd year of the Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty, "one port policy" was issued. The Thirteen Hongs of Guangdong became the only authorized firm in charge of operation and management of maritime trade between China and Western countries. Due to the excellent location and special policy, Guangzhou had monopolized the maritime trade in China for nearly a century, becoming not only the center of global market in the heyday of the Qing dynasty but also production base and transit base of Chinese export arts.

Embroidery, Kown-glazed porcelain, Canton carving, export painting, export wallpaper, export silverwares, export lacquer wares, export fans and business card box made in Guangdong had been introduced to overseas, which showed not only the traditional Chinese style and local aesthetic taste, but also Western styles. Chinese export artworks became a social fashion, setting off Chinese Wind in the West.

Canton Embroidery

Canton embroidery is a general term for folk embroidery products of the Pearl River Delta region, which takes Guangdong as the center, famous for full composition, complex and orderly with bright color and strong decoration. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, Guangdong embroidery formed its unique style by absorbing artistic style of Western oil painting and the principle of perspective and light refraction, becoming one of the Four Famous Embroideries in China. It was popular in Europe and the United States, for it combined the Chinese style with the Western style, catering for the taste of the Westerners.
