Residents will be able to buy goods imported from Hong Kong online, as a bonded global commodity trading center will be built in Qianhai, part of the Guangdong Free Trade Zone to be launched soon, according to a senior official with Qianhai Management Bureau.

Zhang Bei, director of the Qianhai bureau, said at a promotion event, which was attended by more than 800 Hong Kong companies, Monday that the bonded global commodity trade center will likely help divert some mainland tourists from Hong Kong while offering a good chance for Hong Kong companies to explore the mainland market.

The project will be carried out step by step, he said. Since Shenzhen will pilot cross-border e-commerce trade after obtaining approvals from the Central Government and Hong Kong authorities, mainland citizens will be able to purchase goods imported from Hong Kong online, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

“One-third of available land resources in Qianhai are open to Hong Kong companies for development, including Hong Kong industrial associations and the medium and small-sized enterprises,” said Zhang.

By the end of February, 1,171 Hong Kong companies had registered in Qianhai, which is home to more than 23,000 companies with a combined registered capital of nearly 1.4 trillion yuan (US$224 billion). The Qianhai administration will lease five plots of land to Hong Kong companies this year.

The Qianhai Youth Hub provides young entrepreneurs with sources of venture capital and opportunities to network with companies as well as like-minded individuals from abroad. The costs of research and initiating a business in the hub will be partially subsidized.

In the two-year incubation period, Qianhai will provide rent-free spaces for young people in the first year and charge half the price of rent in the second year. In addition, Qianhai will develop more than 4,000 apartments for the entrepreneurs.

According to Qianhai authorities, the prioritized industries in the area are consistent with Qianhai’s overall blueprint, which includes venturing into information technology, modern logistics and cultural and artistic innovation.

Currently, there are three shuttle buses commuting directly between Hong Kong and Qianhai on a daily basis. Zhang urged the development of an urban rail transit system between the two cities, connecting Hong Kong airport, Qianhai and Shenzhen airport.
